The InterAgency Youth Working (IYWG) group

The Interagency Youth Working Group (IYWG) seeks to provide global technical leadership to advance the reproductive health and HIV/AIDS outcomes of young people ages 10-24 in developing countries by:

  • sharing research and programmatic results and lessons on youth reproductive health and HIV/AIDS with the reproductive health, HIV, and youth development communities
  • promoting strategies that move promising research findings and best practices into programs and policies advocating for greater focus on youth within reproductive health and HIV programs

The IYWG is a network of nongovernmental agencies, donors, and cooperating agencies. IYWG partner organizations are funded by USAID through the Global Leadership Priority (GLP) for Youth. The GLP for Youth strategic plan focuses on knowledge management and dissemination, policy analysis and development, operations and evaluation research, service delivery, and behavior change communication (BCC), as well as the thematic areas of married youth, very young adolescents, and gender.

Youth (age 15-24) HIV Prevalance Map

HIV youth prevalence map

Since 2001 MEASURE DHS has helped more than 15 countries conduct population-based HIV testing. The DHS testing protocol provides for anonymous, informed, and voluntary testing of youth. The testing is simple; blood spots from a finger prick are collected on filter paper and transported to laboratories. All respondents receive referrals for free testing, counseling, and educational materials.

This map is a quick representation of the proportion of youth (age 15-24) tested HIV positive in various DHS surveys conducted since 2001.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for Youth

MEASURE DHS uses the MDGs as a guide for designing indicators to track progress made by countries in meeting the targets set by the United Nations. The goals and indicators listed in this section are the ones that relate directly or indirectly to the well-being of youth.

United Nations World Youth Report - 2005

This report complements the quantitative data produced by MEASURE DHS project. It presents a detailed quantitative description of the areas of policy priority addressed by the General Assembly in 2003 on youth.

The report is available from the Youth at the United Nations website.
