Abstract

The 2004-05 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey Final Report details the findings of the field work completed in 2005. Topics include fertility and family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition, malaria, HIV knowledge and prevalence of female genital cutting. The report reveals that infant and child mortality have dropped dramatically since 1999, perhaps in part due to an increase in vitamin A supplementation and improvements in overall nutritional status. However many Tanzanian children and pregnant women do not sleep under mosquito nets. Other key findings include the lack of knowledge about prevention of maternal-to-child transmission of HIV and the fact that only about half of pregnant women deliver in a health facility.
