Abstract: This survey was carried out in Jayapura City, the capital of Papua, Indonesia, where one in four people is between the ages of 15 and 24. The survey was aimed at providing baseline data on issues related to knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of young unmarried women and men regarding sexual activity, reproductive health, family planning, and (looking for a word for sex practices [married/unmarried]),HIV/AIDS prevention. Ninety-five percent of the women surveyed and 88% of the men knew about modern contraceptive methods. Nine in 10 respondents said that they would prefer using a modern contraceptive method, preferably supplied by public health sources. However, unmarried people are not eligible to receive contraceptive methods from public health sources, even though 8 percent of women and 23 percent of men openly admit having had sexual intercourse before marriage. The prospect for these young people to be refused access to their method of choice, including condoms for men, may indeed accentuate the fear that a HIV/AIDS pandemic is very likely in the Papua province, as suggested by the authors. The Jayapura City YARHS was conducted simultaneously with the Indonesia YARHS, which used a sub sample of the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDNS) carried out in 2002-2003.
