Abstract: The two National Family Health Surveys have shown a dramatic change in fertility data in Manipur. The total fertility rate in the state was the sixth lowest in the first survey while it was the seventh highest in the second survey. Almost all known major determinants of fertility do not support this dramatic change in fertility. Hence, the fertility rates in the state shown by NFHS II seem to be highly overestimated.
